- About
19-year-old Natassa from South East London has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Her only chance at survival is a stem cell transplant and she needs to find a matching donor.
Natassa’s older sister, Sofia, explains: “Everything all started when Natassa had a seizure last Christmas. Straight away she started having tests – she had really high white blood cells. After a bone marrow biopsy, Natassa was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in April. My family’s world was turned upside down.
“Initially, Natassa started a tablet form of chemotherapy and she was reacting well. However, two weeks ago, we were working together and she kept complaining of stomach pain and extreme tiredness.
“My Mum’s intuition knew, again, that something was not right. She started getting more and more ill – we assumed it was flu – she did another blood test and three days later we were told the cancer had developed to acute type.
“Our lives turned upside in April but in the last two weeks our lives turned upside down even more.”
Natassa’s family are urging more people, especially those of Greek and Cypriot heritage, to step forward as potential lifesavers. “Even if we can’t find a match for Natassa, if we can help someone else – that’s what matters,” explains sister Sofia.
