In memory of Alice Hanagan

My Story

Sadly at Christmas 2021, after a long fight - my sister Alice became really unwell. She’d been fighting Acute myeloid Luekemia for the last 2 years. She'd fought with such bravery and determination. She was our warrior and although she hated being called it .... she was our hero. Sadly On New Year’s Day, she passed away.

I made a promise to her that I would continue her legacy and do everything I could in her honour to continue raising awareness for causes which she was so passionate about. That's why, each year I will strive to raise money and awareness for charities such a DKMS through various challenges so that she and so many others can continue to live on in the work and hearts of those left behind. If you weren't lucky enough to meet her, let me fill you in with a short snippet of her wonderful personality. Alice was beautiful, courageous, brave, funny and weird. Adventurous, thoughtful, strong, hardworking, passionate, stubborn, loving and gentle. A kind soul. She wasn’t just a sister by blood, she’s one I would have picked by choice.

She was my amazing soul mate - Alice. We shared childhood memories and adult dreams. She’s given me memories to cherish for a lifetime and even in her darkest moments of fighting cancer, she was always trying to raise awareness and help others. She certainly left a handprint on everyone’s hearts.

That's why I'm asking you to help wherever you can, the cost of a coffee even - to raise money that will go towards registering new donors to give someone else the gift of life. Supporting DKMS, creating awareness and encouraging others to sign up to become a donor was a huge passion of Alices and I really think it gave her a new focus and helping others; helped her to carry on fighting. Sadly she never found her match, but Liam and I hope we can continue her legacy by continuing to raise awareness and money for the charity to carry on doing its work and give others a second chance at the wonderful thing we call life. We've called upon other family members and friends to take part in this race with us, and we know she'll be having a right laugh watching us all trying to run!

If you can’t donate, please sign up to DKMS through their website and consider doing the free swab (it’s quicker and easier then a covid test) you could be a match and save someone’s life by donating your stem cells (it’s just like giving blood)

Every 20 minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with blood cancer. Often their only hope of survival is a stem cell transplant from a stranger and DKMS works hard to add as many potential lifesavers to the blood stem cell registry as possible. The money I raise will add more potentially life-saving matches to this register, as adding each one costs DKMS £40, and give more blood cancer patients a second chance at life.

Thank you for your time and support,

lucy and Liam xx
